Autonomic Nervous System (ANS)

The ANS has two parts: the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS). If we are not regulating between both, we get stuck in stress response.

Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS)

The sympathetic nervous system is often called "fight or flight" because it prepares the body to fight or run from danger. When the SNS becomes dominant, blood is shunted away from the internal organs into the muscles and the periphery of the body (arms and legs) to facilitate action. This increases utilization of nutrients and hormones, as well as tissue destruction, producing a catabolic (breakdown) effect on the body. The SNS is dominant when exercising, working, or doing something that requires increased delivery of blood to the muscles, including stress. 

Parasympathetic Nervous System (PNS)

The parasympathetic nervous system is often called "rest and digest" because it is responsible for digestion and elimination, serving to regulate restoration and repair of the body, making it more anabolic (rebuilding/repairing). The PNS also stimulates immune function while you are sleeping.
